A Global 2000 materials company had developed a cellulose-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic — up to 51% plant-derived content in a single-step extrusion process — as a lighter, lower-carbon alternative to conventional glass-filled plastics. The challenge: where would a cost-sensitive, qualification-driven industry actually adopt it?
Qanopy explored applications from automotive and EV to consumer products and packaging, conducting 12+ interviews with OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, molders, and lightweighting experts. The key insight was disarming: customers will not pay a premium for “green.” Adoption is driven by weight, cost, manufacturing efficiency, quality, and supply-chain compatibility.
The strategy focused on lightweight automotive and EV components, backed by technical validation (moldability, shrinkage, recyclability — 90%+ strength retained after four recycling cycles) and a mapped value chain showing exactly where qualification and purchasing decisions occur.
